In 1872, William Mitchell built his own distillery in Campbeltown following a dispute with his brother. The distillery was named Glengyle. He already had experience as a whisky distiller through his collaboration with his brother John, co-owners of Springbank Distillery.
In 1919, he sold the distillery to Highland Distillers Ltd., who, due to the worsening economic situation, closed the distillery. On April 8, 1925, the remaining stocks were sold.
In 1940, the remaining buildings were rented to the Campbeltown Miniature Rifle Club, which installed a shooting range on the premises. The name Kilkerran comes from the Celtic “Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain”, meaning the place where the monks of Saint Kieran, originally from Ireland, settled in Campbeltown.
In 1957, Campell Henderson Ltd. made an attempt to reopen the distillery, which unfortunately failed. In 1979, the distillery was dismantled, and the building became the sales office of Kintyre Farmers Co. One of the warehouses was even converted into a garage.
Seventy-five years after the last production of spirit at Glengyle, Mitchell’s Glengyle Limited was founded in November 2000 by Mr. Hedley Wright, with the aim of launching a fully renewed Glengyle Distillery. Hedley Wright is the great-grandson of William Mitchell, the founder of Glengyle, and also serves as director of J&A Mitchell & Co Ltd., the owners of Springbank Distillery.
Renovations and outfitting of the distillery began in February 2001. Stills in excellent condition were purchased from Ben Wyves. By May 2003, the technical installations were fitted. In January 2004, larch washbacks (each 30,000 litres) were installed, and the millroom was fully restored. In May 2004, the first new-make spirit was filled into casks.
As of January 2013, all Glengyle operations have been legally separated from Springbank and transferred to the newly established company Mitchell’s Glengyle Ltd.
