This cognac has been aged for 8 to 10 years, including 8 months in new oak. The result is a very fruity, refined and smooth cognac at an excellent price. Montifaud VSOP comes exclusively from the Petite Champagne region and is made solely from Ugni Blanc grapes.

Cognac is an alcoholic spirit of 40% ABV or higher, obtained by distilling white wine.

To be called cognac, the spirit must meet several conditions:

• Specific grape varieties must be used.
• It must be double distilled.
• The spirit must be aged for at least two and a half years in wooden casks.
• The alcohol content must be at least 40%.
• The spirit must come from the Cognac region.
• It must originate from the area surrounding the French town of the same name, covering the departments of Charente and Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region).

Only nine grape varieties may be used for production:
Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Folle Blanche, Jurançon Blanc, Meslier Saint-François, Montils, Select, Follignan and Sémillon. The majority of grapes used (90%) is Ugni Blanc, locally also known as St-Émilion.

By law, the exact age of the cognac may not be stated on the bottle. Instead, an age designation appears on each bottle, the most common being:

• **V.S. or *: minimum ageing of two and a half years
  (V.S. stands for Very Special or Very Superior)
• V.S.O.P., V.O. or Reserve: minimum ageing of four and a half years
  (V.S.O.P. stands for Very Superior Old Pale or Very Special Old Pale, V.O. for Very Old)
• Extra, X.O., Napoléon, Hors d’Age or Ancestrale: minimum ageing of six and a half years
  (X.O. stands for Exceptionally Old)
