Douglas Laing is opgericht in 1948 als bedrijf dat zich specialiseerde in de blendindustrie. De firma had veel succes met luxe bottelingen als "King Of Scots". Het bottelen van single cask whisky startte pas rond 1999 en groeide sindsdien uit tot één van Schotlands grootste onafhankelijke bottelaars. De bekendste en meest befaamde reeks is nog steeds Old Malt Cask, Old & Rare en Provenance. Later volgde Director’s Cut, Old Particular, Premier Barrel, Clan Denny (voornamelijk gerijpte graanwhisky's) en Big Peat.
In 2013 scheidde de wegen van de twee broers (Fred & Stewart Laing) die destijds de zaak van hun vader Douglas overnamen. Beide gingen hun eigen weg: Hunter Laing behield Old Malt Cask, Old & Rare en de Douglas Of Drumlanrig range. Het bottelen van single casks blijft wel een groot deel van hun business.
