The team at Liquid Art is no stranger to Islay whiskies with this Laphroaig. However, as far as I know, this is their first 'Laffie'. And it has big shoes to fill following the delicious Kildalton 2008 and Staoisha 2013 I tasted not so long ago. This Laffie spent its entire life in a PX cask—the king of sherry—and you can certainly tell!
A mysterious, dark nose. Sauerkraut with bacon, caramel popcorn, melon with smoked ham, dates, and figs... a fantastic, albeit somewhat wacky nose, if you ask me. Umami and sweet notes vie for dominance, but even after ten minutes of nosing, it remains a draw. And the expected peat smoke? While present, it is rather subtle and stays in the background, which only adds to the intrigue.
OMG, that is delicious! On the palate, it’s also a battle between umami and sweetness, while a lovely spiciness provides plenty of warmth. The peat smoke suddenly becomes very bold on the tongue and is absolutely satisfying. The typical maritime and slightly medicinal character is strongly counterbalanced by the sherry’s dark, sweet notes, lending it a caramelized quality. And it’s not really a case of 'versus', mind you; they go hand in hand perfectly. Great balance.
The finish lasts an eternity, remaining sweet and smoky, yet ultimately fading away with umami and peaty notes. Magnificent.
If I’m not mistaken, this is their 40th release. Kudos, Liquid Art! And for anyone wondering what that strange title means: it is a place in Scandinavia where the photo shown on the label was taken. In 1790, two murderous robbers—Moses Samuelsen and Michel Hansen—were tried and beheaded at this location. Today, one cannot see traces of the spot where Moses and Michel were buried. A few gnarled bushes battling the gusty winds, along with driftwood and marine debris, are the only things that “adorn” the graves. A bit dark, isn't it? Just like the whisky.
