At Nikka, Frontier holds a special place. The distillery champions a more assertive, yet also more open, expression with a blend built around peated malts primarily from Yoichi. The approach is clear: to maintain a true aromatic backbone without resorting to ostentation. Grain whiskies distilled in Coffey stills at Miyagikyo then complement the blend, adding roundness and softening the edges.
This blending approach is rooted in Nikka 's history . Frontier remains true to the legacy of Masataka Taketsuru, trained in Scotland from 1918, who then founded the Yoichi distillery in 1934 on the island of Hokkaido. The choice of this location, combined with its harsh climate, sea winds, and iodine-rich environment, illuminates the desired profile: a dense, powerful whisky, marked by peat, yet crafted with the pursuit of balance that the distillery attributes to its Japanese sensibility. Frontier also distinguishes itself through its production choices. Bottling is carried out at 48% ABV, without chill filtration, to preserve the texture and aromas. The expression contains over 51% malt, reinforcing a more structured character, underpinned by a pronounced smoky signature.
In the glass, the promised profile remains consistent with this construction. The nose is woody and fruity, with notes of marmalade, rich malt, and a touch of smoke. On the palate, the whole is smooth and full-bodied, with a ripe, fruity sweetness that tempers the peaty bitterness. The finish, finally, lands on a gentle, woody, and sweet persistence. A style that prioritizes structure over boldness, and clarity over showiness.
